Description

Some of them you may see for just a few seconds but they give you a message. The message can be funny, sad, shocking or even unbelievable but the outdoor billboard is designed in such a way that in a few seconds it can have an impact on your mind. How do they do that? The answer is simple if you look at a billboard long enough and know how billboards are made. In this unit we are going to examine some good and some not so good ad campaigns to see what makes an effective design. Then we are going to develop our own outdoor billboard and one page ad to see if we can make something which can influence a growth in the AICE enrollment.

Duration

This project will take 12-16 class days depending on speed and abilities of the class, and how detailed the student wants to make this project.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:
  • learn about the important design houses and ad agencies around the world.
  • identify the challenges in advertising to create an effective ad campaign.
  • design an effective ad campaign for the AICE ART and Design program
  • Document their process on the journey from a sketch to a full color layout with typography.

Materials

  • Pencil
  • Sketchbook
  • Digital Camera
  • Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop software
  • Computer
  • Internet Connection
  • AICE Rubric

Step by Step Procedures

Day 1:
  • Introduce Project
  • Show samples
  • Start the Process, brainstorm.
  • Sketch ad campaign idea layout, and add details to develop a drawing/rendering.

Day 2:
  • Continue to develop with your drawing/rendering.
  • Artist Study: Find the person(s) whose art you connect with. Make the connection on how you can implement their style in your design, and report on the findings.
  • Think about about initial colors that you are attracted to.
  • How much information is too much on an outdoor billboard.

Day 3:
  • Color Theory: Create color swatches & talk about color schemes
  • Understand the reason you are choosing the colors for the consumer.
  • Add color to your poster sketches.
  • THINK about style or look of a font(s) you would want to compliment your ad within the campaign.

Day 4:
  • Font Study: Sketch out fonts ideas in your sketchbook
  • Apply the font sketches on your ad campaign (start on the sketches first then the more detailed color drawing)
Day 5:
  • Font Study (cont.): Use one of the reference fonts sites to research downloadable fonts for your designs.
  • Download the fonts to experiment with. NOTE: Your final design will have no more than three (3) different fonts.
Day 6-12:
  • Computer Lab: Use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Illustrate any graphics necessary for your design
  • Build in Layers: Name your Layers so they are easy to identify.
  • Build on top of your template. NOTE: DO NOT create a design larger than a U.S. tabloid size (11” X 17”) for your billboard, and U.S. Letter for your one page ad
  • Save final as a pdf
  • Print your final design i.e. office supply store, fedex store, UPS store.
