Description


Students will study the history of the self portrait and gain better working use of Illustrator while creating their own self portrait. By using an interesting composition that includes either a prop or one or two hands near the face, and choosing a monochromatic color scheme, students are forced into a successful setup for their work. Confidence and trust will be gained in the Illustrator program, strengthening future projects.

Duration


This project will take 6-10 class days depending on speed and abilities of the class, and how detailed the teacher wants to make this project.

Learning Objectives


Students will be able to:

Materials


  • Digital Camera
  • Adobe Illustrator software
  • Computer
  • Internet Connection
  • Self Portrait Rubric
  • AICE Rubric

Step by Step Procedures


Day 1:
  • Introduce Project
  • Show samples
  • Take student photographs while students research a famous self portrait.

Day 2:
  • Prepare document first in Photoshop (photo editing only!) then in Illustrator
  • Practice saving to the correct location (Google drive)
  • Create the Alphabet they will use (lowercase and Caps, no Jokerman!)

Day 3:
  • Create color swatches & talk about monochromatic color schemes
  • Practice copying letters and layering them over photograph using SmartBoard.
  • Hand out rubrics and give the project deadline

Day 4, 5, 6:
  • Workdays

Assessment


Students are assessed with a rubric. See attachment in Materials section.
